HPE OneView is the central infrastructure management platform for HPE Synergy. It uses template-driven profiles to compose physical and virtual infrastructure (servers, networking, storage) into logical resource pools, enabling rapid, consistent, and repeatable deployment. While other tools have specific uses, OneView provides the unified, composable management core for Synergy.

RAID 1+0 (also called RAID 10) combines mirroring (RAID 1) and striping (RAID 0). It provides fault tolerance by mirroring data across pairs of drives, so the array can survive multiple drive failures if they are in different mirrors. It also offers excellent read performance due to striping. For a high-performance, highly available database, RAID 1+0 is the preferred choice over RAID 5 (which has write penalties) or simpler RAID levels.

Correctable Memory Errors (ECC errors) are common and often handled transparently by the hardware. The best practice is to first investigate using iLO’s detailed health sensors to determine the error rate and location. A slowly increasing rate might be normal, but a sudden spike indicates a failing DIMM. You should also check for HPE Service Notices for known issues. Immediate replacement or ignoring the logs are not best practices. Firmware updates should be considered but are not the first step without investigation.

Securing iLO before OS installation is a critical security best practice. The most comprehensive approach includes: changing default credentials (mandatory), enforcing modern encryption (TLS 1.2+), reducing the attack surface by disabling unnecessary services, and implementing network-level controls. Simply changing the password is insufficient. Using default credentials or weaker protocols creates vulnerabilities. OS-based tools cannot manage all iLO security settings, which should be locked down independently.

The Online System Upgrade (OSU) feature of HPE 3PAR StoreServ allows for non-disruptive updates of the storage system’s firmware, including the service processor and node controllers. It works by updating nodes in a rolling fashion, ensuring data remains available and host I/O continues with no downtime. Peer Persistence is for disaster recovery, Adaptive Optimization for data tiering, and Online Import for data migration.

HPE SimpliVity’s built-in, VM-centric backup and restore functionality is designed for rapid recovery. Backups are policy-based, efficient (leveraging global deduplication), and stored locally. Restoring an entire VM or individual files (via Microsoft VSS or Linux file-level restore) is performed directly from the SimpliVity interface in minutes, without needing to move data from a separate backup server or tape, making it ideal for quick recovery from logical errors.

HPE StoreOnce uses source-based or target-based Global Deduplication to eliminate redundant data blocks, drastically reducing the physical storage capacity needed. The Catalyst technology is a proprietary protocol that integrates with backup software (like HPE Data Protector) to send only unique, deduplicated data over the network to another StoreOnce, minimizing WAN bandwidth consumption for replication. The other options are storage features not specifically optimized for backup replication efficiency.

For component-level health within a server node (like a PCIe adapter), the Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) management processor is the primary source of detailed hardware sensor data and event logs. The iLO Event Log (IML) will capture hardware events, warnings, and failures reported by the server’s management subsystem, including issues with installed adapters. OneView provides a higher-level view, SIM is legacy, and the OS Device Manager may not show pre-OS or hardware-level faults.

The primary function of creating a SUM baseline is to perform an inventory scan of the server’s or enclosure’s current firmware and driver components. SUM then compares this baseline against the components in a user-selected repository (e.g., SPP). This comparison generates a report showing what is current, what can be updated, and any dependencies or requirements, allowing the administrator to make an informed decision about which updates to apply. It is a critical planning and analysis step.
