For the strictest low-latency goals, the factory-tuned BIOS, firmware, and driver settings that are specifically validated for PowerFlex provide a significant advantage over a generic Build-Your-Own configuration, ensuring optimal performance out of the box.

PowerFlex’s fault tolerance is based on the number of failure domains (nodes). With three nodes and two-protection domains (equivalent to RF2/RL2), data is mirrored across two nodes. The system can tolerate the loss of one node. If a second node fails concurrently, only the volumes whose second copy resided on that second failed node become unavailable. The cluster itself remains operational for other volumes.

PowerFlex allows adding devices to an existing SDS. The correct procedure is to physically install the drives, then use the administrative tools (CLI or GUI) to explicitly add the new devices to the specific SDS. They will not be added automatically. This action adds the capacity to the storage pool the SDS participates in.

While jumbo frames are beneficial, the most critical foundational practice is network isolation. Dedicated NICs or VLANs for PowerFlex storage data traffic prevent contention with other network flows (like VM, management, or vMotion), which is essential for achieving consistent, low-latency performance and avoiding instability caused by packet loss or delays on a congested shared network.

Fault tolerance is implemented at the Protection Domain level, ensuring replicas of data are placed on SDSs in different failure domains.

PowerFlex performance is decoupled from provisioning. Whether a volume is thick or thin provisioned affects capacity reporting and allocation behavior, but not its fundamental IOPS, throughput, or latency. Performance is governed by the underlying physical devices (NVMe vs. SAS) in the storage pool and any Quality of Service (QoS) policies applied to the volume.

The ‘Network Disconnect’ alarm for an SDS is triggered at the management layer. It indicates that the MDM (Master Deployment Manager) has lost heartbeat communication with that specific SDS over the management network. This could be due to a network issue, a host firewall change, or the SDS process crashing, but the alarm is specifically about loss of management connectivity.

To access PowerFlex block volumes, any host (whether a VM hypervisor like ESXi or a bare-metal OS like Linux or Windows) requires the SDC software. The SDC is a lightweight driver that communicates directly with the SDS nodes over the storage data network (using RDP or NVMe/TCP), providing block device access to the host OS.
